DGA Director Writes on Child Soldiers in Foreign Policy

Do you think child soldiering is a new practice?  If so, think again…
Division of Global Affairs Director Simon Reich and Scott Gates demystify child soldiering by revealing lesser known truths in their compelling Foreign Policy article, “Think Again: Child Soldiers.”  They show us that practices more recently introduced to public awareness, such as the utilization of girl soldiers are not new. They put our sense of reality in check by reminding us that Western standards for children’s rights are not necessarily the norm.  Reich and Gates share details often ignored by the human rights activist community.

Simon Reich is the Director of the Division of Global Affairs at Rutgers University-Newark.

Scott Gates is the Director of the Center for the Study of Civil War at
the International Peace Research Institute.
